Umrah in the month of Ramadan is a dream of many Muslims, imagine witnessing the beauty of Kaaba during this blessed month. The date of the beginning of Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to be around 8 February 2027, which will be announced by the moon sighting announcement of Saudi Arabia. There are new digital systems, new booking rules introduced as more people than ever expected to visit the Holy Land this season. From paperwork and vaccinations to physical fitness, spiritual aspirations, packing, and safety, this guide ensures a stress-free, secure, and effective Ramadan Umrah 2027.
Update: The fast of Fajr and Maghrib is shorter during February in the UK, and it is not as difficult to fulfil them as in summer. Local timetables and community iftars are available, with Islamic Relief UK a source of local timetables.
Why is Umrah in Ramadan so special?
The famous narration of the Prophet (PBUH) is that an “Umrah in the month of Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj”. It is not obligatory, but it is a great explanation for all the pilgrims to choose this blessed month.
The benefits go beyond the reward:
Multiplied worship: There are several experiences that pilgrims have described as life changing, such as praying Tarawih, Qiyam in the Haram, and seeking Laylat al-Qadr in Makkah.
A spiritual restart: Being able to fast, recite the Quran, and perform dhikr in the two holiest cities helps to develop habits that will remain with you after returning home.
Community: Breaking the fast with other pilgrims from all around the world shows the unity of the entire Ummah.
Forgiveness and renewal: The time of Umrah is a time of sincere repentance, dua and a new beginning.
Mild-weather: As Ramadan is in the winter season in 2027, the fast is not as difficult to perform as in past summer Ramadans, and the temperatures of Makkah and Madinah are much more comfortable than summer Ramadans.

Final visa, entry and departure dates are in the spring of 2027, please check the current dates on Nusuk or with Dua Travels.

What's New: Exclusive Updates for the Umrah Season 2026-2027
There have been some recent changes to the rules. These are the changes that all US pilgrims need to be aware of before booking.
1. No booking, no visa
All Umrah visa applications are now required to verify booking of hotel and transport packages on the official Nusuk website or from a registered Umrah tour operator. You can no longer simply get a visa and sort out accommodation later.
2. Nusuk is compulsory for everyone
All pilgrims, regardless of visa type and nationality, are required to register on the Nusuk app. Nusuk arranges your Umrah permit, your Rawdah visit slots in Madinah and entry to the mosques. The visa is required to enter the country, but the Nusuk permit is needed to enter into the Grand Holy Mosques for Umrah.
3. The new one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa
This visa will be available from July 2026 and is valid for one year from the date of issue. No more than 90 days stay for all visits. Importantly, Saudi authorities have clarified that each and every visit still requires a new Umrah service package, a recent Nusuk permit and eligibility is verified before boarding your flight.
4. The shorter time available to enter following issuance of the visa
According to the recent updates and reports, the new rules require an entry into Saudi Arabia within 30 days of the issuance of the visa, which was earlier 90 days. Do not apply for a flight unless your plan is confirmed.
5. Umrah is available during the month of Ramadan
During the last few years, the Saudi government has issued only one permit for carrying out the pilgrimage during the month of Ramadan to control the overcrowding.
6. Permits
Nusuk permits are typically free, although there are some premium slots that may have fees, so visit some travel guides for details. Check with your agency what is included in the package,
Please note: Travel restrictions may change rapidly. Please always check requirements on the official Nusuk website, Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and Saudi Ministry of Health before paying or flying.
Here is a step-by-Step checklist for the preparation of Umrah for USA Pilgrims.
Step 1: Book early (now is the time)
Ramadan is the busiest period of the Umrah year, and the last ten nights sell out first. For those planning to travel during February or March 2027, it is recommended to book a Ramadan package well in advance.
Travel industry guidance suggests Ramadan packages are best if booked in advance, so if you want to travel in February or March 2027, start your search now.
The distance of your hotel from the Haram (walking distance is very important in Ramadhan time)
If meals like Suhoor and Iftar are considered part of the fast or not
Haramain high-speed train between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah.
Check if the provider is approved by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and on Nusuk like Dua Travels USA.
Group size and guide quality, and cancellation terms.
Note: For those who like to experience comfort, particularly elderly parents or families with children, there are luxury and premium options that offer hotels that are positioned right across from the Haram.

Step 2: Examine your passport
Your U.S. passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date. Make sure to renew early as processing times may be long. Create copies of your passport, visa, flight information and hotel reservations, both digitally and as a hard copy.
Step 3: Get the right visa
Citizens of many countries, including the United States, are generally eligible for the Saudi tourist eVisa, which can be used for Umrah as long as you have verified bookings on Nusuk and obtain an Umrah permit. Another option is to obtain a special visa for Umrah from an authorized Travel agency like ours. The processing of visas may be longer during Ramadan, so apply for your visa as soon as your booking is confirmed and travel dates are set.
Step 4: Health Requirements are completed
Meningococcal vaccine (ACWY): A vaccine is required for all pilgrims of 1 year of age and older. It should be administered at least 10 days prior to arrival and the period of validity varies according to the vaccine. It can be given by your doctor or a travel clinic.
Additional recommended vaccines: Usually, routine vaccines like seasonal flu, COVID-19, measles, and others are recommended to be kept up to date by Saudi health officials and the CDC. Consult a travel medicine specialist at least four to six weeks prior to travel.
Maintain your vaccination records in the travel folder and keep it throughout the journey.
Step 5: Sign up to Nusuk and book permits
Install the Nusuk app, register and connect your passport and visa information. Reserve your Umrah permit in your package for the exact dates. Book Rawdah permits early in Madinah as slots are booked up fast during Ramadan.
Step 6: Purchase Travel Insurance
Saudi tourist visas include the basic mandatory insurance, however a separate comprehensive travel insurance policy with medical coverage, trip delays and trip cancellations is strongly advised particularly for older pilgrims or those with chronic health conditions.
Step 7: Be physically prepared
There is a lot of walking involved in Umrah: walking around the Kaaba (tawaf), walking between the two points (sa'i), and walking to and from the mosque, usually in a large group.
Start walking at least 6-8 weeks prior to departure and increase to a few miles per day.
Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals.
Try fasting on Mondays and Thursdays or in Sha'ban to get used to fasting during Ramadan.
Talk to your doctor about managing medications while fasting and traveling.
Carry prescriptions in original packaging along with a letter from your doctor.
Step 8: Spiritually prepare and learn the rites
It is helpful to learn the steps before you go if you are a first time pilgrim.
Ihram: When you enter into ihram, it is with the intention to perform Umrah at the Miqat.
Talbiyah: Say it often after Ihram.
Tawaf: Seven circuits around the Kaaba.
If possible two rak'ahs behind the Maqam Ibrahim or anywhere in the mosque.
Sa'i: Seven laps between Safa and Marwa.
Halq or Taqsir: Shaving or cutting of hair (women have small hair cut).
Do a pre-departure course in your local masjid or through your travel provider, read a trusted Umrah guide and make your own list of Duas to say for yourself, your family and the Ummah. Clear up any debts that you may have and ask forgiveness from those you may have wronged as well; this is part of preparing your heart.

Makkah and Madinah Travel Tips
Getting there and around
Flights: Direct and one-stop flights are available from the main gateways in the USA to Jeddah and Madinah. Book in advance, because the prices for Ramadan trips are high.
The comfortable high speed train service connects Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah, known as Haramain train. Book via your provider or official channels.
Taxis and ride-hailing: Plenty of taxi and ride-hailing services are available, but there may be traffic congestion and road closures around iftar and tarawih times.
Staying near the Haram:
In Makkah, a hotel close to the Haram minimizes fatigue, saves time before prayers and is much more considerate to old pilgrims. The ease of attending all prayers and planning for the visit to the Rawdah is made easier in Madinah due to the ease of proximity to Masjid an-Nabawi.
Timing your visits:
Do Umrah at the quiet times of the day, like the middle of the day or after Fajr, as per your permit. The best time to perform Tawaf is after Tarawih and during the last ten nights. The mosque's courtyard is filled long before the time for prayer arrives, so arrive early for Jumu'ah and Tarawih prayers.
Plan rest. Many pilgrims get tired by doing too much. Worship includes sleep and water, as well.
Suhoor and iftar
The Haramain are renowned for communal iftars, in which dates, water and food are shared amongst volunteers. Many hotels also serve iftar and suhoor in buffet style which may be preferable if you want to explore a more predictable meal.
Ziyarat
Visit Mount Arafat, Cave Hira and Jabal al-Nour in Makkah. Visit Quba Mosque in Madinah, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, Uhud and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Due to the lesser energy and crowd during Ramadan, perform one or two guided ziyarat rather than overbooking.
Precautions and Safety Tips:
Crowds in Ramadan can reach extraordinary levels, so safety planning matters.
Stay hydrated. Take water in between iftar and suhoor. Have electrolytes and refrain from overindulging in heavy fried foods during the iftar meal.
Coughs and colds can spread more easily when there are large numbers of people around. Wash hands frequently, wear a mask in crowded places, take rest and seek medical attention at the first sign of symptoms.
Rest where it is marked and if you or an elderly relative require a wheelchair, use that provided at the Haram. Reserve in advance, if possible.
Do not split up the group. Record the name and address of your hotel in Arabic, and have your guide's number memorized.
Guard your belongings. Carry a small secure cross body bag and don't carry a lot of cash. Don't let your phone run out of battery.
Obey signs and security directions. Crowd-control measures safeguard all people, particularly during Tarawih and the last ten nights.
Beware of unauthorized sellers and offers. Only use those that are on Nusuk and never use providers that are too good to be true or unlicensed agents.
Respect mosque rules. The following rules are enforced: photography restrictions, etiquette for prayer areas, sitting, queuing and bags. Do not push others and be patient.
Medical conditions and fasting. Please consult your physician before fasting if you have diabetes, heart disease or any chronic disease. There are concessions to be granted to the traveller, the sick, and your health is a trust.
Tips for those who are on the pilgrimage for the first time:
Know the rituals before reaching the sacred land.
If it's your first time, travel with a reputable and authorized Travel agency.
Set spiritual goals. Choose what you want from your journey, whether you want the completion of the Quran or you want to establish a habit or you want to make a certain dua.
Don't hurt others and indulge into any fight, Do not push against Kaaba and the Black Stone. When a crowd is present, it is sufficient to point at it from afar.
Have duas list on phone and on paper.
Disconnect to reconnect. Keep social media time to a minimum and concentrate on worship.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Waiting too long to book, then settling for a distant hotel
Taking the vaccine too close to departure
Entering Saudi Arabia outside your visa's entry window
Forgetting to book the Nusuk permit or the Rawdah slot
Overpacking or bringing unsuitable shoes
Overscheduling and ignoring rest
Choosing a provider based on price alone
