Importance of Hajj in Quran and Hadiths

" وَاَتِمُّوا الۡحَجَّ وَالۡعُمۡرَةَ لِلّٰهِؕ "

Islam is structured on five pillars or fundamentals and according to the reference of the last Prophet PBUH that Hajj is one of them. It is essential for all the Muslims to perform Hajj rituals at least once in their life depending upon their financial and physical condition. This pillar of Islam is known as one of the greatest practices which needs to be completed according to sunnah and correct steps taught in the Holy book, Quran. Hajj holds top priority in Islam which can be understood through the guidance and light of the religious book and Hadiths.

and publicly proclaim Pilgrimage for all mankind so that they come to you on foot and mounted on lean camels from every distant point. (Surah 22 Al-Haj, Ayah 27)

Explanations

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was ordered by the Almighty SWT to proclaim the pilgrimage to the people, he was asked to invite mankind to perform the sacred Hajj. On this account Prophet Ibrahim AS asked for the guidance from Allah SWT, that how will my voice reach everyone. This was the moment he was promised by the Creator to ensure that each one of them will be able to listen to his voice and it will reach the ears of all.

"On Foot and Mounted on Lean Camels",

This imagery used in the translation highlights the intensity and hardships of the journey. "Lean camels" (\(dhamir\)) indicates the animals become thin and weak because of the long journey they have to complete which promotes the devotion of the pilgrims and also shows a deep difference between those who spare no effort or comfort to reach the sacred land for Hajj.

"From Every Distant Point/Pass",

This phrase highlights that Hajj is not restricted and it is not for a specific group or cast to perform. But for the entire mankind despite any creed and cast from every corner of the earth.

Main Goal: The main goal of this sacred performance is to unite humanity to come together and worship the Creator of all, Allah Almighty SWT. The mankind can witness spiritual benefits and unlimited blessings on the designated days of Hajj pilgrimage.

What Is Hajj and Why Is It a Pillar of Islam?

It is the obligatory worship in Islam which helps pilgrims connect with the Almighty SWT deeply and gain countless blessings. During this sacred pilgrimage Muslims wear plain white clothes often referred to as Ihram which is an un-stitched piece of clothes for men performing Umrah and Hajj to wear. While on the other hand women pilgrims dress in plain cloths with covered head and body as per the instructions. During Hajj, Muslims can feel the real importance of life here on earth, and most significantly afterlife. This Holy performance provides you with a chance to wipe away and clean all your mistakes performed in the past. This is a great opportunity offered by the Almighty to his creation (mankind) to come and get their sins removed for a fresh and purified start again.

As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“One who comes to this House for Hajj and avoids all lewdness and sins, he returns as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari & Muslim).

Hajj is performed annually which takes place during the last months of Islamic Calendar, Dhul-Hijjah. This sacred practice is marked as the final and last pillar of Islam, which makes it a mandatory act of worship for the pilgrims to perform depending on their financial and physical stability for at least once in their lifetime.

The foundation of Hajj can be traced back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim, his wife Hajar, and their son Ismail (AS). Their steady belief in the plans of Allah SWT established the sacred rituals of Hajj to be performed by the entire mankind followed today. These rituals start from Tawaf in which pilgrims circulate around the Holy Kaaba, to standing on the plains of Arafat, every step of the Hajj is planned according to developing gratitude, humility, and a deeper connection with the Almighty.
